In high concentrations (e.g. in drain cleaners), sodium hydroxide can also be used as a caustic, helping to dissolve organic matter such as clogged drains. Sodium hypochlorite is the basic ingredient in laundry bleach and mildew and mildew removers. It’s also a bleach that helps unclog drains.
Acidic drain cleaners typically contain sulphuric acid or hydrochloric acid. The chemical reaction between the acid and the blocking materials, along with the heat released by the reaction (“heat of solution”), serves to dissolve the blockage.
Sodium hydroxide (lye), NaOH.
Chemical drain cleaners
The drain cleaner chemicals in these products typically consist of lye, caustic potash and bleach. Also known as sodium hydroxide, lye removes stubborn deposits by breaking the chemical bonds that hold them together.
Sulphuric Acid is a by-product of cleaning iron ore. It is the most common acid used in liquid drain cleaners.
Sodium hydroxide is found in drain cleaners. Antacids, which fight excess stomach acid, are made from bases such as magnesium hydroxide or sodium bicarbonate.
Mix together 1/2 cup table salt and 1/2 cup baking soda and pour down the drain. Let sit for about 30 minutes (or overnight if it is severe constipation). and then a pot of boiling water.
Most liquid drain cleaners work through a chemical reaction right inside your drain pipe, often with the help of hydrochloric acid. These reactions usually generate heat, and this heat can irreversibly damage the tube itself.
Most brands of chemical drain cleaners are made using sodium hydroxide – commonly known as caustic soda or lye – or sulfuric acid as a base.
Some drain cleaners have strong acids as active ingredients, while others have strong bases. Lye is a common strong base with the chemical formula NaOH (sodium hydroxide). Basic drain cleaners may also contain potassium hydroxide, KOH. Acidic drain cleaners usually contain sulfuric acid, H2SO4.
Add 3 cups of sodium hydroxide to the water and stir with a plastic or wooden spoon. The mixture begins to bubble and heat up in an exothermic reaction with the water. Pour your aqueous sodium hydroxide solution down your sink or drain and wait 30 minutes before rinsing it off with boiling water.
Drain cleaning removes debris buildup in the pipe. Drain hole – Known as “wiring,” involves aiming the area with the obstruction with a snake tool. Piercing the blockage allows drainage to flow through. This is the least expensive method, but less effective in the long term.
Drano is a basic drain cleaner. Alkaline drain cleaners are among the most alkaline substances there are. Some score a 14 on the 14-point pH scale. This is easier than bleach, which should give you an idea of how dangerous these drain cleaning solutions can be.
If you’ve ever used Drano or a similar commercial product to clean your drains, you’ve used caustic soda, although it’s usually identified as sodium hydroxide on the label.
The police were called to DRANO – the Downriver Area Narcotics Organization. That was her name – DRANO.
Dish soap and hot water
Mix 3-5 tablespoons of liquid dish soap with two liters of boiling water. Pour the mixture carefully into the sink, being careful not to spill. Depending on the fat blockage, you may need to repeat the method a few times.
